ABOUT MELISSA NEWIRTH
She discovered her love for design at a young age. Growing up near New York City she was influenced by fashion. My mother worked in the fashion industry and she shopped in the garment center directly from the showrooms. Her friends and their mothers thought she had such a great eye they invited her to pick out their clothes, thus she found herself becoming a personal shopper.
A true world traveler she left New York at 18 and migrated west first to California, then Hawaii and she now resides between Portland Oregon and Maui. Her interests expanded from fashion to collecting antique fabrics. she started a vintage textile company and became a prop stylist for catalogs and editorials in magazines such as Pottery Barn Catalog, Pippers Catolog, Country Living magazine, Food and Wine magazine, to mention a few. She pulls her inspiration for her interior design work from her travels to Indonesia, Italy, France, Mexico, Fiji, and the UK. Always looking for the unexpected whether it be from nature or shopping for one of a kind flea markets and antique shops around the world.
She has been consulting in the interior design field for 12 years working on projects for new construction, remodeling, staging homes, vacation rentals, residential homes, as well as commercial spaces. Her work has taken me to Hawaii, Portland, California, New York, and Nantucket. She collaborate with designer, Kate Bayer who works on the East and West Coast. You’re more likely to find best friends Naomi Newirth and Lyndie Irons in bikinis than business suits. Still, the designers have managed to grow their obsession with swimwear into a flourishing business venture with ACACIA Swimwear. Here, we chat with Maui-born Naomi about (practically) being born in a bathing suite and island living.
What sparked the creation of your line?
I love bathing suits and grew up living in them. I could never find the perfect one so I began sewing them myself and that is how ACACIA started.
What kind of girl wears ACACIA?
Any girl that is confident enough to get in a bikini. She is a “gypsetter.” She is adventurous, likes off-the-beaten-path places and enjoys the culture of beautiful destinations such as Bali, Maui, Montauk, Fiji, Australia, France, Morocco, India– the list goes on. She leads a healthy and active lifestyle.
What is your favorite piece from your current collection?
I alternate wearing them all but I find myself throwing on the Quinn top and Missy bottom often, or Mila in Cantik.
Who is your favorite swimwear icon?
There are definitely some designers I admire but I dont have a swimwear icon. I grew up on the islands wearing suits that were all hand made.
What song best represents your line?
Loving this song right now: “Crave you Feat. Giselle” by Flight Facilities.
What’s in your beach bag right now?
Multiple ACACIA suits for options, fins for working the booty. La Roche Posay sunscreen. My glass bottle filled with water and my picnic knife– I always grab a green apple and almond butter from the health food store.
What’s the most fun you’ve had while wearing a swimsuit?
Surfing at Ho’okipa or running through the bamboo forest in mud to jump into a waterfall.
