Q + A by Nell Love -I had the pleasure of meeting the designer Naomi Newirth at the Swim Show and she had some time last week to answer some quick questions about the line!
When did you know you wanted to design swimwear? I grew up in a very creative household; my mother grew up right outside of NYC and was into fashion and interior design. I also had a Waldorf education, which really fosters the imagination. The arts were recognized as being equally important to the academics. So art and fashion was something I was always drawn too. Being from Maui I grew up romping around in bikinis daily. I always had a love for swimwear so in high school I learned how to sew my own bikinis and that is where starting ACACIA SWIMWEAR stemmed from.
What inspired your Resort 2012 Collection? For this particular line which is our 2012 collection I was inspired by other cultures. Part of my heritage is Native American. I have a collection of original old beadwork, which is quite popular now, the patterns were inspiring. Also my travels to other countries inform my designs too, working with and getting to know the native peoples. I am always looking at their textiles and colors.
Favorite Beach? Ho’okipa on Maui for its fun waves, good friends, and beautiful sunsets. Balangan beach in Bali is my second fav. Its gorgeous with a surf break, cute warung’s on the sand and little tide pools with star fish.
Bandeau or String Bikini Top? string triangle top…easier for surfing or running the beach : )

I celebrated my moms 90th this past week and found this amazing pic of her when she was younger. I love her black lace dress which is in vogue right now and the composition of the photograph, the color of the wall and the flowered blanket. She still has style and a great sense of fashion, not to mention that she is so much fun to be with. Generation to generation, I love ACACIA’s Belle Nomad collection and am so proud of Naomi and Lyndie and their beautiful line ACACIA SWIMWEAR.
